Definition
A malignant prostate tumour whose behaviour depends on its aggressiveness and extent.
Symptoms
Often symptom-free early on. Urinary symptoms may occur but frequently have benign causes.
How it may be discovered
Found after an abnormal PSA, suspicious examination or risk-based assessment.
When to seek care
Consult about abnormal results, family risk or persistent symptoms.
Investigations and tests
Contextual PSA assessment, examination, MRI and indicated biopsies; staging according to risk.
Reaching a diagnosis
Biopsy analysis usually confirms cancer and grade. A raised PSA alone does not diagnose cancer.
Treatment options
Selected active surveillance, surgery, radiotherapy with or without hormonal therapy, and systemic treatments for advanced disease following specialist discussion.
